Our History

Bighorn Safes was founded in 1977 with a simple mission – to build the toughest, most secure gun and home safes money can buy. Based out of Payson, Arizona, we proudly manufacture our products using the finest materials and most advanced techniques right here in the USA.

Our story begins with our founder, John H. Brush, a third-generation master safe maker. John got his start in the safe industry back in the 1950s, learning the trade from his father and grandfather before him. After honing his skills for over two decades, John decided to strike out on his own and start Bighorn Safes.

Armed with generations of experience, an unwavering commitment to quality and a team of skilled safe artisans, John set out to build safes that exceeded all others in strength, security and fire protection. He pioneered the use of laser cutting equipment and robotic welding arms to craft precision safes with consistently tight tolerances. John also developed proprietary doorjamb systems, vault-grade locking bars and composite hard plate door barriers that added tremendous strength against prying, drilling and cutting attacks.

From the very beginning, every Bighorn safe has been made by hand, one at a time, by American workers right here in our Arizona factory. We use locally-sourced, 12-gauge A36 steel plate that is up to 50% thicker than many competitors. Our build process includes over 120 quality control checks, ensuring every safe meets our rigorous standards before being finished with an industrial powder coat for maximum rust protection.

Our Facility

Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Payson, Arizona spans 85,000 square feet. We chose this high-desert location because its moderate climate allows us to dry fire and hand finish our safes year round. Our talented team of safe artisans use cutting edge equipment alongside tried-and-true hand craftsmanship to build the toughest safes money can buy.

Our Safe Technology

Bighorn Safes are engineered and built to a level of security that far exceeds most other safe brands. We manufacture our products to rigorous standards developed over 40 years of innovation. Here are some of the technologies that separate our safes:

• SafeArmor – Our exclusive composite barrier system protects against drilling, torching, prying and cutting attacks. SafeArmor includes hard plate inner barriers, relockers, thermal blocks and active seal technology that fills cracks with expandable gas to block hot oxygen fueling a fire.
• Unibody construction – Our safes are formed from continuous, one-piece steel plate. This unibody design eliminates vulnerable seams and provides incredible strength. The door is integrated directly into the safe body for a solid feel.
• Vault-grade lock protection – We shield our S&G mechanical locks and SecuRam electronic locks inside a recessed pocket. This prevents direct attack on the lock from pry bars, drills or cutting torches. The lock is secured by active and inactive bolts to stop punch attacks.
• Composite doorjamb – Our exclusive composite door jambs are precision-fitted to the safe body. The unique door channel is formed of welded steel reinforced by a full-length composite barrier. This resists jacking, punching and prying attacks better than a simple bolt-on design.
• Active relockers – We build our safes with both passive and active relockers as a last line of defense. If an attack manages to breach the safe, spring-loaded relock bolts will deploy into the doorjambs to secure it. This “locks down” the safe against any further attack.
• Thermal insulation – All our safes utilize proprietary Thermal-Shield insulation that protects contents in fires up to 1875°F. This drywall-like material absorbs heat and releases steam to keep interior temperatures cool.
